St. Louis policeOn Thursday, an armed 11-year-old boy shot and killed a 16-year-old during a suspected home invasion in St. Louis County, police said.

A representative for the St. Louis County Police Department said the incident occurred just before 2:30 p.m. on the 10,000 block of Hallwood Drive.

The 11-year-old boy was inside the home when two suspects attempted to break in, reported KSDK.com.

The boy picked up a loaded gun and fired off a shot, which struck the 16-year-old, according to KSDK.com. The station also reported that the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

One neighbor said the boys were on the front porch arguing, and then the young boy pulled a gun and shot the 16-year-old, CNN reported. But police said the boy was shot in the head while the unnamed teenager broke into the home.

The neighbor also said the teenager never once went inside the house, and they were going back and forth, arguing loudly, according to CNN.

The second suspected home invader was caught after fleeing the scene, reported KSDK.com.

Police said the 11-year-old, as well his 4-year-old sister, were home alone, but they did not suffer any injuries. The mother was said to be cooperating with the investigation, according to police.

A CNN affiliate said that it was the mother's gun that was used to shoot and kill the teenager, and she purchased the gun because her home has been the target of a number of burglaries in the past.
